Is Marigold a Safe Home Remedy? How You Can Safely Use Marigold As a Healing Herb and Home Remedy

marigold, one of our most popular garden plants has some great healing properties. More than often Calendula is grown in our gardens just because we love this colorful, cheerful flower. However, this is a plant with some amazing healing properties that we often neglect to mention. The Latin name is Calendula officinalis but it is more commonly known as pot marigold, common marigold or garden marigold. It is a member of the Asteraceae family and is likely to have originated in southern Europe. It has been a popular plant for such a long time its origin has been lost in history.

Healing Properties of marigold

We are just beginning to appreciate the healing properties of Calendula. It is a herb which is quickly becoming more and more popular as an alternative remedy and is now being included in many products. Both herbalists and medical doctors recommend Calendula to treat anything from acne to difficult to heal sores.

Marigold Treatment of Psoriasis and Eczema

Calendula salves and creams have long been used by herbalists as popular remedies for skin rashes, inflammations of the skin and the treatment of delicate skin. It is also known to help to treat eczema as well as Psoriasis. As an active ingredient in some hair shampoos, it can be used to treat dandruff and as an effective treatment in the battle against scalp based eczema.

Marigold As an Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

More recently Calendula has also been added to body lotions and face creams to combat dry skin, and as an effective anti-wrinkle treatment. Many nappy rash creams now also contain Calendula as it seldom causes side effects, and does not dry out the skin.It is also useful as a cream to apply to sore or cracked nipples when breastfeeding. Calendula is known for its antifungal properties and can help to treat thrush in a baby’s mouth as well as thrush of the mother’s nipple.

Teenage Acne and marigold

Teenage acne, and the odd annoying hormonal spot, also responds well to an application of Calendula ointment. Amongst its many healing properties Calendula can enlist anti-septic qualities which are useful when it comes to treating a range of skin conditions.

Can Calendula Be Used Internally?

Calendula is not so well-known for its internal uses. Most commonly it is now being used in mouthwashes but it has in the past been a popular internal treatment in traditional folk medicine. A tea was made out of the flowers, and this was used to treat ulcers, colitis, swollen glands and inflammatory pelvic conditions. Now it is more seldom used as an internal treatment but some herbalists still use Calendula to treat a range of internal health problems, as it is known to have very few side effects.

Products based on Calendula can be found in most health food stores, and a Calendula cream is an excellent addition to any first aid kit. It is often used in combination with other healing herbs. More and more products containing Calendula extract are being launched as manufacturers of skin care products begin to appreciate this herb. This safe and effective but gentle herb deserves to be better known for its many healing properties.

Natural Herbal Remedies For Menopausal Relief

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs when a woman’s menstruate cycle and childbearing years has ended and marks the beginning of menopause. For many women that can be a good thing. Menopause can occur at age 40 or 50, but the average age is 51 in the United States. There are unpleasant symptoms, but you can use natural herbal remedies that will give you menopausal relief.

There are several menopause symptoms, but every woman will not experience every one of them, and some symptoms will be severe. Research and try the herbal remedies that will offer you menopausal relief.

Note that some natural herbal remedies can have dangerous side effects when combined with over the counter or prescribed medications. Make sure you ask questions.

Now I will share the menopausal symptoms

1. Hot Flashes/Night Sweats.

This menopausal symptom is one of the evilest one of all. It can range from mild annoyance to severe “out-of-your-mind” that you can not think. Hot flashes can come on sudden and without warning, leaving you flushed, sweaty, headache, chilled, nausea and heart racing.

Two herbs I use and recommend for hot flashes are Black Cohosh and Red Clover. Note, these herbs have the following nutrients: calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, and vitamin C. It is also considered to be one of the richest sources of isoflavones (water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogen. I like the tea form of the herb, but you can always purchase the pill supplement form.

2. Anxiety/Stress/Insomnia/Mood Swings/Panic Attack/Weight Gain

Are very common due to hormonal imbalance during menopause. Hormones are produced by glands in the body and control bodily functions everything from hunger, sleep, to the onset of puberty and controlling the reproductive system.

There are two traditional herbs to use to control these symptoms: Ginseng and Kava.

Other things that may provide relief for menopausal symptoms and maintain your overall health are Vitamins A, D and B Complex, Calcium, Evening Primrose Oil, Wild Yam, Licorice, Maca and St. Johns Wort.

Other things you can do to help alleviate the menopausal symptoms is to reduce or to eliminate caffeine, exercise on a regular basis, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep and to set aside time daily to relax.

1. Get frequent trims — yes, really.

It may seem counterintuitive, but if you want long hair that’s actually healthy, you need to get regular trims. “While haircuts don’t make your hair grow any faster, they get rid of split ends that break your hair,” explains celebrity hairstylist Michael Dueñas. “Eliminating the breakage gives the appearance that your hair is growing faster.” After all, a split end that breaks can lead to your hair losing length — not to mention shine, volume, and smoothness. 2. Resist the urge to go blonde.

Having long, strong hair doesn’t just depend on which products you put on your hair; it also depends on what you put into your body. “To promote hair growth, you need to ‘feed’ the hair from the inside,” explains Dr. Francesco Fusco, an NYC-based dermatologist. “Try increasing your protein intake with foods like fish, beans, nuts, and whole gains.” If you’re not a meat-lover, you should still aim to maintain a diet high in protein. 5. Avoid heat styling tools.

“Stop over-styling your hair,” warns celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves. If you must use heat, Paves recommends decreasing the temperature and always using a heat protectant — otherwise, you risk damaging your hair, leading to breakage and frizz.

6. Skip the daily shampoo.

By now, you’ve likely heard all the testimonials attributing great hair to going “no ‘poo,” but do you know why it actually helps your hair? “Shampooing your hair two to three times a week allows your natural oils to penetrate your hair, allowing it to hydrate and repair itself,” explains Paves.

7. Add a vitamin to your A.M. routine.

8. Finish your shower with a cool rinse.

A super steamy shower isn’t just bad for your skin — it’s also rough on your hair. “Turn the water temperature down when cleansing,” recommends Paves. “And rinse with cool water to help seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair before styling it.”

9. Be careful when you brush wet hair.

Hair is especially susceptible to breakage when it’s wet, but if you absolutely mustget some knots out post-shower, make sure to use a brush that will go easy on your strands. “Using a Tangle Teezer or Wet Brush is key,” says Davey Partain, stylist at Kennaland salon in Brooklyn. He also notes that the technique is just as important as the tool. “Start gently brushing from the ends and gradually work your way up. And don’t just brush the top layer — brush the hair underneath as well.”

10. Start using minoxidil.

11. Stop doing trendy “cleanses.”

Diet companies may try to convince you that a “cleanse” will turn your whole life around, but Dueñas strongly advises against them. “Doing a cleanse is terrible for your hair because you’re depriving your body of nutrients,” he warns. “After doing a cleanse even for a week, you’ll notice slower hair growth and lackluster locks.”

12. Sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Getting better hair in your sleep ispossible — all you need is to switch up your pillowcase. “Silk is easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage,” says Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a physician from Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. The less breakage your hair experiences, the longer your hair will be. (Slip’s silk pillowcases come in a variety of pretty colors.)

13. Pay attention to your skin.

It’s easy to see shiny hair initially and assume a product is working for you, but Dean recommends taking a closer look. “What the formula is doing to your skin is generally what it’s doing to your hair,” he says. “Does it make your skin feel dry, stripped, heavy, waxy, sticky or greasy? Or does it feel soft, hydrated, silky and supple?” Treat your hair the way you would treat your skin — after all, it’s another part of you! If your hair follicles are clogged and congested, there’s no way it can grow as efficiently.
